We’ve all had the experience of seeing an item on the shelf of a decor store antique palace that looks like a model from a distance – but a dust catcher from close up.
Not that real scale models do not catch dust…it is just that the decor items are stuff that is churned out for the tourist market in third world counties and dropped into our local crap shops as filler in furniture containers. Tin, plastic, wood, whatever, with approximately the right shape or colouring…but not really.
Seen a wooden sailing ship made for decor? Or a tin Holden ute? Yeah.
The worst thing is when someone else sees one of these monstrosities and thinks it would be perfect as a gift for you. They spend good money on a bad product for a questionable reason. You have to thank them for it – and keep it visible when they come to visit.
Do not growl – you can always get your revenge by doing the same. Are they fashionable? Buy them a pair of knitted somethings, but be sure the work has been done in polyester. If they are a wine connoisseur, a bottle from the slopes of Mt. Despair will do nicely. And what art lover’s heart would not melt at a print of large-eyed children playing guitars.
Merci, mercy, and merde are all perfectly good words.
