No Kittens Were Harmed In The Making Of This Kit

But it was not for want of trying.

Pets and scale model kits would be a combination made in Heaven, if Heaven involved a great deal of inconvenience and anger. Anyone who has seen a long-haired cat walk over a half-rigged biplane will know exactly what I mean. If you factor in the static electricity, the tendency to jump on the table and the cyanoacrylate tube, you have the sort of scenario that used to send people screaming from the theatre.

Dogs, too, can come in for their share of something. Small and yappy or large and wet – it’s hard to choose a favourite, but when you are soldering something they lose their status as your best friend.

Good modelling rooms have a door that can be shut – so do toilets. This won’t discourage the family pet, but you knew that already. Shut and locked is better, and shut, locked and welded tight is also an attractive thought.

In a future post we’ll deal with the dangers of children in the modelling room, but in the meantime you might want to call at the chemist for a small bottle of laudanum.
