I am very grateful to the committee for giving me one of the model airplanes built by a former club member.
It is a beauty, and shows the sort of skill he had. I would willingly trade it in for him back in the club, but funerals put an end to a lot of things. They also leave a lot of things for others to deal with…and the distribution of scale model labours of love is one of the tougher tasks.
Relocating by donation is a difficult business as it assumes the receiver has the space to store and display that the donor does not. In the case of big collections this is a vain hope. Things get parcelled out piecemeal. The best that can be asked is that they are taken with reverence and displayed the same way.
Eventually even the greatest treasures are just curios. Our models get to that stage a lot faster than Chippendale chairs or mummies’ sarcophagi.
We must just enjoy them while we can.
