No-one can see the big annual scale model exhibition with its associated competition and think that model building is an unrewarding hobby. There is a pile of trophies, medals, and kit and accessory prizes there on the table to testify differently.

Every one of the awards has come about by hard work and diligent judging and the recipients can be justly proud. Fame is short lived – but prizes last – and in some cases may long outlive the models that won them.

Fortunately the model contests do not include speeches by the winners – like the Oscars or other media events. The people who get the prizes pose for a quick pic and then have the decency to beetle off stage. It makes for a much quicker and more interesting ceremony.

Wise winners thank the committee later and that is the end of it until next year.
