The Little World

And there are all sorts of spirits…

a. The generous spirit.

Thess modellers make friends with all their club mates and anyone met at shows. They give away models and accessories to help other people. They appreciate other people’s efforts. They contribute to club affairs.

b. The mean spirit.

They keep what they know to themselves, lest others outreach them. They never donate anything to anyone. They do not so much stash as hoard – making sure that others cannot have what they desire. They demand top dollar for secondhand sales.

c. The adventurous spirit.

They buy the kits that other people shy away from, out of shops that look like charnel houses. They open kit boxes full of resin, brass, wood, fungus, and broken dreams and somehow build from them. They rig 1:700 biplanes. With turnbuckles.

d. The foolish spirit.

They know best and cannot be argued with – whether it is for their own good or not. They are natural pioneers in mine fields. They rarely last long.

e. The pedantic spirit.

How many rivets is a small matter. Do the rivets have peened or domed heads – that’s the point. You cannot build a 1964 1:700 scale fishing tinny with the wrong rivets. There are standards, you know…
