How Many Clubs Are The Right Number?

Well, if you are playing poker, 13. Any more gets you shot.

How about social life? Can you belong to more than one club, and if so, is it beneficial?

To take the first question…well, yes. Provided they are not mutually exclusive organisations – ones that bar additional membership – you can belong to as many as you like. Of course there will be a cost in time, money, and mental concentration that compounds as you add more memberships.

If you run out of days or evenings upon which you attend a club or pursue its activities something must suffer. Long before this happens, your brain may well overload and you will lose interest in all activity.

Is multiple membership beneficial? Yes, if something that is learned in one area is helpful in another – no, if each club so competes for your enthusiasm that it is too diluted to work. Also no if you use one club to criticise another.

You may appear at a disadvantage in one club if you bring the attitudes of another to it. Read the room early and see if outside influence is welcome or not.

Do not give in to criticism, however if people say you are not loyal to one or other of the organisations. You are loyal to yourself, and if two memberships strengthen you, embrace them both.

Note: choosing clubs with differing meeting times or intervals is smart…as is choosing different themes or activities. Then you do not burn out.
