Douglas C-47 – Part Two – Honeymoon Express

The plane I’m building has a real history – apart from being a special scheme on a set of aftermarket decals. ” Honeymoon Express ” was the lead ship on a paratroop assault on Nadzab in New Guinea in 1943 in conjunction with an assault on Lae. It is a good point of interest as it will enable me to model other USAAF aircraft used in the assault as well.

The Italeri kit is a good basic start, and as there is little to be seen inside the cockpit of a C-47, I can do all I want with a small variation in paint. I’ve chosen the SMS interior green for the flying compartments, but will carry on with the Mr. Color No.27 green for the the chromate areas. The seats will be bleached cloth, and I may dry brush some scuffing on the paratroop compartment floor.

I’m also going to look for some paratroops – both Australian and Americans dropped at this action and there may be some Airfix 1:72 or 1/76 figures that can utilised. Bless Italeri for including two rather good crew figures for the cockpit – they are by far the best 1:72 flyers I’ve got.

  1. Did you ever finish the model? My father was the radio operator on that plane on that mission!

    1. Thank you for contacting me, Dean. I am delighted to read about your family connection.

I did, indeed finish the model and published two more posts. Part Three – entitled ” One Day ” went out on July 27, 2020. Part Four – ” The Romantic Gooney Bird ” was published on this sit on July 28, 2020. Please go look them up.

The decal sheet that made it possible was from the Czech firm of DK Decals.
