Why Don’t You Build…

Most people use the phrase ” Why don’t you…” to tell someone to do something.

They are not really asking for a reason why something is not being done. They save that for ” Why didn’t you…” and that is just criticism. In my case I have been asked why I don’t build more Australian prototypes for my Air Museum. I can actually give real answers:

a. There are few accurate kits of Australian planes from the major makers, and the short-run garage kits that make up the rest of the offerings are somewhat daunting. I’ve coped with one resin Boomerang and one Northrop Delta from Special Hobby. The rest might be more than I want to tackle.

b. Other people have done them before, and done them far better than I would. Of course this is no reason to refrain from anything, but it is still a thought in the back of the mind.

c. I know very little about Australian aircraft, other than the business of sitting inside the passenger ones and eating airline food. I quite like the meals in Business class when someone else pays for them. But I dread making such glaring errors in colour or markings as would bring the anoraks down upon me.

d. I find other aircraft, air forces, and airlines more interesting. They say we never see the beauty of our own yard.

  1. I have a proposal for you then – why not one of the Catalinas which visited WA? Either as one of the Black Cats of the “Flight of the Double Sunrise”, or one of those belonging to Marineluchtvaartdienst (Royal Netherlands Naval Air
Service – MLD) destroyed in the Japanese raid on Broome in 1942? I would even supply the Academy kit…

    1. I already have built one of the Academy Catalinas and enjoyed it greatly – having made one in the 1950’s from a Monogram kit. In the latest evocation I patterned it after an Israeli one – No. 3402 – that is sitting in their aviation museum. I’m really on the lookout for a model that I can modify as a Canso fire tanker from Newfoundland. Or a Catalina I that can represent the RCAF in 1941 off Nova Scotia.
