When To Call It A Day

And when to call it a week…that point at which you decide to either finish the model or cut your throat.

This is not as foolish a thought as first may seem. There will be more accessories and additions to the kit that you bought than you’ll have on hand. Scalemates shows 4 different mask sets and resin after-market parts for it. There are 5 different sets of decals at Hannants. There is an article from 1980 in an old Airfix magazine that shows how to make a working hinge for the toilet door on the model.

You need never stop. You can continue to build on this same $ 1.49 kit for the next decade. The only thing that will restrict you is incipient madness.

Because madness it surely is. You can treat any scale model build as a bagatelle – do the minimal amount of work and then fling it on a shelf – or you can devote your entire working life to it… and come out at the end with a $ 1.49 kit that cost you $ 14,000 and your marriage.

Draw a line. In the sand, on the workshop floor, or around your throat…and do not go any further with your build or your Xacto knife. Set a goal early on, and stick to it. Do not go that bridge too far. It is a hobby, not your soul.
