Do Not Sell Your Models

Build them.

Whether you build them SOOTB, or tricked out with a dozen packets of after-market…build them. Build them painted or plain, weathered or fresh, well or otherwise…but build them.

That is why they were made.

That is why the designers sat at the drafting board or computer screen until their eyes turned red. That is why the moulding crew burned their hands. That is why the wholesalers and the retailers risked their capital and their working lives…to get those models built.

It is no good just opening the boxes and gobbling with delight at the sprue trees – you could as well go into a marble quarry and look at slabs. The marble is nothing more than rock until Michelangelo makes it into David.

Having a million-dollar collection of potential builds pales to nothing when one kid builds a 50¢ Airfix baggie and finishes it. He wins, you don’t…just as the slowest runner who makes it round the track beats the spectators who sit in the stands and jeer.

  1. Yes… BUT, I have some kits on the shelf I bought in a moment of madness, and I really don’t relish ever having to put them together. (Exhibit 1: the M12 “Long Tom” GMC by UM, which I bought because I wanted that vehicle but couldn’t find the ESCI/Italeri version. It’s got a lot of detail — way more than is actually fun for me to do!) It would be nice to recoup a bit of that cost and get the one I really wanted… Cheers!
