The Burgeoning

It is like ” The Quickening ” only it takes longer.

It also takes more money, time, and space. The Burgeoning is the process by which scale model kits get bigger and more complex. It steers the scale model hobby into new areas of expertise while it clutters up display cabinets worldwide.

It’s not hard to see why model aircraft are popular in 1:72 scale – they are relatively cheap to purchase and relatively small to display. Those of you who have bought Ukrainian models of Soviet bombers may dispute this, but you won’t be getting all that many more in the future.

The scale of 1:48 is also pretty easy on the purse and the shelf, but the temptation to step up to 1:32 is always there, and you can kiss goodbye to the idea of a cheap cabinet. One airplane is gateway to two and then all hell breaks out on the domestic storage scene. Big begets bigger.

So you’ll build tanks? 1:35 and they’re blocky little models, right? Your first rail gun will show your true colours. Then you’ll see the advertisement for the 1:16 tank, and then the 1:8th. You might as well go dig something 1:1 out of a Finnish marsh and spend the rest of your life de-rusting it.

Spare your blushes. The R/C aircraft people and the model railway builders have it worse. The former can make things that are actually dangerous to the airways and the latter have been making ride-on locomotives for years.
