Will We Run Out Of Prototypes?

I asked myself this one day as I idly scrolled through the catalogues of Hasegawa, RS, and Special Hobby. I was trolling for 1:72 aircraft that I had not built yet.

For a time there it was looking a bit bleak. The Hasegawa people are deriving a lot of their income from kits of Gundam, Japanese schoolgirl dolls, and racing cars. The long list of 1:72 aircraft they were purported to produce has dwindled. I was wondering whether all the good ones would be in stashes by now.

The RS, Sword, and Special Hobby lists were more promising…still quite a few that I’ve never built, and some variants that fit my collection exactly. A lot out of stock, but at least they existed at some stage of the game, so there is hope yet.

The real solution to a dearth of new kits is to look further afield at things that never even occurred to me; the 1:144 airliners, the Soviet Air Force, civilian light transport, etc.

Heck, I had no idea there were as many different airliners as there are. My childhood had 4 kits available in total, and their scales did not match.
