It Must Have A Little Challenge

It cannot be entirely Shake ‘n Bake.

Easy-build kits are a blessing. I welcome the opportunity to whack together a classic air-frame in a day. It gives me a chance at the airbrush and decal printer next morning ( I love the smell of lacquer thinner in the morning. It smells like victory….). I can make something unique without having to slog through weeks of scratch-building.

Yet, the easy-builds only go so far. If the makers were to adopt this idea and turn out odd prototypes or forgotten planes I would buy no other – but the economics of the hobby prevent this. If I want a model of the Fangdoodle FG103K with the sunroof and beer cellar, I am going to have to start cutting and gluing.

Best I accept this and tell myself that I am having fun doing it. With a little self-deception, I may come to believe it.

So if the kit needs new parts – or a colour scheme of 8 separate shades – or a decal sheet that looks like macrame…well I had better just get on with it. Whatever comes out at the end will be good for something – either the eye, the soul, or the bin…
