All scratch-builders should build a model from a kit.

It is no good looking at someone else’s take on the scale model hobby and pooh poohing it. Or wondering whether they have it better than you. Or wondering whether you could ever do it…

Wise experimenters do it simple at first. The long-time kit builder has a store of tools and finishes in their workshop already. It is only necessary to get a plan of something, some hobby materials, and a little bit of internet knowledge. Then you lay out the plans, start cutting and attaching, and see if you can get a pretty good approximation of the plans.

Structures and buildings are a good start. Small sheds, lean-tos, and platforms are well within the skill level of someone who builds plastic kits, and if they have a couple of Superquick or Metcalfe’s cardboard houses under their belt, so to speak, the rest is easy and rewarding. You’re on your way to a vignette or diorama.

The long-term scratch-builder might not realise how complex kits may be these days. The details that he normally leaves out as too hard are not so with a good kit. The little cracks and crevices can be filled in and new finishing techniques practiced.
