The Model You Always See

But can never buy.

I look at websites and catalogues on-line. I would collect the paper ones if they were offered – catalogue dreaming was one of the great pleasures of childhood. There was no money for the big kits but you could still imagine building them.

On a lot of the Australian screen sites we see complete lists of shop inventories and factory offerings that look marvellous. However, more than 3/4 of them have ” Out of stock ” against them, and will never actually be available again for sale.

We can desire them all we wish, but neither lust not longing will ever put them on a shelf.

How come? And don’t covid me yet again. Unless your factory is currently being bombed by the Russians or the Ukrainians, there is only economics and incompetence to explain the lack of stock. Or are local retailers reluctant to import stock?

Does this stop them from removing the old listings? A typewriter shop that advertises Corona Reporters but hasn’t been able to sell them since Menzies was Prime Minister would be laughed off the market…
