Mining The Archives

Which is a good way of making sure no-one gets into them. Be sure to keep an accurate record of the placement of the charges in case you have to reopen them…

Our club has a library and a magazine rack, and all the members are free to borrow the books and magazines on display. A number of us have contributed items from our own bookshelves for the club, and we’re glad to have the extra space at home.

We also realise that some of the material we’ve given over might not be as accurate nor as valuable as it once was. Research and the internet have surpassed many of the paper archives. You have only to look at the magazine rack to see this – ten years is a long time as a builder, even if the companies are selling 50 year-old kit mouldings.

There are advantages for a Western Australian modeller, though. Our state is jeered at by some for being a decade behind the times. When we look at some instant fashions this can well be the case – but when we look at the world’s troubles rather than the novelty goods or trendy behaviour, we are ever so grateful for the delay.

The delay also means that techniques a decade old may be perfectly valid for us now. I’ve just read a 2007 article on vac-forming canopies that can be done with things in my workshop…and I get on very well with vac-forms. They are quite compatible with bow pens for framing lines.
