In case you think I have become addled or have narrowed myself too much, let me make a modest proposal.
Model airfields and airports form the basis for a complete division of the little world hobby – every bit as much as model railways or miniature houses. The concept just needs organization.
I’ve done a little in the line myself on a tentative basis with my 1:72 presentations of portions of RCAF Station WET DOG and later Wet Dog Regional Airport. They have been alternately laid out and tucked away in my studio and many photographs taken. It’s been an ongoing process of experimentation that is not finished.
There may be many more people who would also do this, if they had the fellowship and encouragement of others. The use of space to lay out a field and display the aircraft and structures can be quite compact or very large. The peak size of Wet Dog Regional reached 2.4 x 3.5 metres…smaller fields have occupied a 0.9 x 1.8 metre trestle table.
If smaller scales are adopted – the 1:200, 1:400 or 1:500 sort – longer runways and larger tarmacs can be depicted, as well as modern airport structures. There are quite a few premade buildings, mats, and aircraft in these scales as they are a sub-division of the die-cast collecting hobby.
More thoughts in Part Two.
